Midwestern State Builds Life-Saving Overdose Early Warning Dashboards
A Midwestern state has faced a persistent opioid crisis for decades, with overdose fatalities reaching record highs in recent years. Traditional approaches relied on reactive measures, responding only after reported spikes in overdose deaths. This lag left communities without the ability to anticipate and prevent outbreaks. State leaders needed a proactive, data-driven solution to identify emerging overdose hotspots and allocate resources before more lives were lost.

The state partnered with Avaap to develop a fully automated predictive model to forecast potential drug poisoning outbreaks. The dashboard aggregates data from multiple sources—including emergency medical reports, naloxone administration, socioeconomic indicators, law enforcement activity, and toxicology findings—to forecast overdose risk at the ZIP code level up to 30 days in advance.
Key Features:
This solution empowers local health districts, hospitals, behavioral health boards, and first responders to act proactively by deploying naloxone kits, fentanyl test strips, and running awareness campaigns.
The Overdose Early Warning Dashboard has transformed the state’s approach from reactive to proactive, creating a critical window for intervention. Communities now anticipate overdose spikes and mobilize resources before fatalities occur.
Early Outcomes:
By leveraging data-driven insights, the state and Avaap have set a new standard for public health response, proving that predictive analytics can save lives and strengthen community resilience.
