Another theme at HIMSS this year will be usability. Again, it has been a theme before and it will continue to be something we are working towards.
In the past, usability simply meant I could figure out how to use the software with minimal instruction and if I thought it worked well, then it was usable for me. Now, we’ve been ignoring the science of usability that’s been developing for the last few decades.
We ignore it only at our peril now.
We know how people interact with machines and computers. I see software becoming more and more usable and vendors trying to differentiate themselves. Not by the power of the programming necessarily, but by how easy it is to operate it and to meaningfully use it. I’m using the word meaningful, not trying to be ironic, but to actually be able to do more than what is required without having to sit through hours and hours of training the first time, like I encounter, a lot.
