ERP and EHR System Selection
Columbus Regional Healthcare System (CRHS) is a community healthcare system located in Whiteville, North Carolina, serving the healthcare needs of the local and regional community. CRHS boasts an impressive and highly trained medical staff and other healthcare professionals who represent a range of specialties and are dedicated to the well-being of every patient.
Columbus Regional Healthcare System recognized the need for transformation and embarked on a five-year strategic roadmap to align its technology with the hospital’s clinical focus, including the plan to implement a new electronic health record (EHR). CRHS sought third-party expertise and partnered with Avaap to provide a review and analysis of the strategic roadmap as it related to their information technology future.
Later, CRHS expanded the relationship to leverage Avaap’s advisory services in support of selecting the new EHR and ensuring it aligned to the hospital’s vision. Avaap played a key role in the system evaluation process that led to the selection of Cerner CommunityWorks. CRHS then needed a trusted partner to lead the pre-implementation planning, transformation, implementation, stabilization, and ongoing optimization of the integrated system across the clinical and financial areas of the health system.

Best Practice Approach
Avaap aligned project management best practices, experience in the industry, and Cerner’s CommunityWorks implementation methodology to create a robust, clinically driven plan to help CRHS reach its goal of improved patient safety and outcomes, better provider efficiency and clinical collaboration, and an integrated EHR that covers the continuum of care across inpatient and outpatient settings.
Avaap project leadership focused on aligning CRHS’s strategic initiatives while optimizing the implementation, allowing the organization to keep its goals on target, Avaap’s transformation leader guided CRHS’s leaders in taking the time, early on and up front, to identify the optimization areas prior to implementation. This ensured a streamlined and efficient process for transformation during the implementation to create sustainable results.
“Avaap understands EHR software design and how it works, as well as the demands of healthcare organizations and the needs of the caregivers,” added John Young, CEO, CRHS. “We appreciate the clinical expertise and EHR knowledge they bring to support the large, complex integration of CRHS’s new EHR and ensure we take full advantage of all it has to offer.”
