The Challenge
El Camino Health realized that their existing systems were not working the way they needed to, leading to multiple systems that were not integrated. This put additional strain on busy hospital staff and clinicians and highlighted the need to modernize existing technology with the cloud. Additionally, leaders were faced with the challenge to have real-time data, and insights into the hospital’s operations.
After previously partnering with Avaap for physician personalization sessions to reduce physician burnout and improve EHR usability, El Camino brought in Avaap to help with their Workday deployment and integration with their Epic EHR.

Deploying Workday enables El Camino to run real-time reports and streamline existing applications for easier vendor management and improved staff productivity. El Camino will be able to leverage technology to support improved revenue cycle performance, automate transactional processes, and streamline billing functions, which will lower AR days. By improving staff experience and streamlining processes, the health system will ultimately enhance the patient experience.
Streamlined Processes and Improved Insights
The goal was to have streamlined processes for greater efficiency and better insight into the hospital’s operations. The COVID-19 pandemic was a prime example for the business case in deploying Workday.
“As our county went into lock down mode for COVID-19, we needed to have real-time data at our fingertips; for supplies, resources, and financials,” said Deb Muro, CIO, El Camino Health. “The ERP and EHR systems are the workhorses that allow you to run your business and make real-time decisions moment by moment as you’re working in a pandemic.”
EHR and ERP Integration
El Camino began their CISOM journey last year in tandem with a Workday deployment. The project involved 107 points of integration between the new ERP and EHR.
Increasing interoperability between the EHR and ERP and climbing the CISOM ladder will allow El Camino to increase supply chain maturity, better use modern functionality for lowered costs and limited revenue leakage, and improve its BI and reporting.
